The Department of Energy (DOE) implemented on Wednesday a 60-day price freeze on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and kerosene for the province of Cebu, following the powerful earthquake that shook the area on Tuesday evening.
“Stability of fuel prices and availability of supply are vital in times of disaster. The Department is working closely with all partners to make sure that families and frontliners have access to the essential energy resources they need during relief and recovery operations,” Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said in a press release.
She stressed that the agency, working alongside the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), will closely monitor petroleum product prices by carrying out inspections, ensuring compliance from retailers and distributors.
Moreover, the DOE assured that supply in the province is sufficient and that it is making sure petroleum products remain accessible, particularly in evacuation centers and the hardest-hit communities.
Aside from extensive damage to public infrastructures, facilities, and residences, the magnitude 6.9 earthquake caused 69 fatalities and injuries to over 150 people, according to the Cebu provincial disaster office.
