The Philippine government has allowed farmers and fisherfolk to purchase fuel in portable containers during the ongoing national energy emergency, the Department of Agriculture (DA) announced.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. said the Department of Energy (DOE) confirmed that fuel may be bought using containers such as jerry cans and drums, provided it is for legitimate operational needs and not for hoarding.
The policy aims to ensure continuous agricultural and fishing activities, with fuel to be used for equipment such as tractors, irrigation pumps, and fishing boats. Buyers are required to present proof of operations, including business permits or certifications.
Tiu Laurel emphasized that sustaining food production remains a priority, as mandated by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., highlighting the need for uninterrupted fuel access for key sectors.
Meanwhile, the DOE and DA have deployed monitoring teams to fuel stations nationwide to ensure compliance. While fuel stations may impose purchase limits, authorities stressed that priority should be given to essential sectors like agriculture and fisheries to prevent disruptions in food supply.
