The Department of National Defense (DND) firmly rejected statements from the People's Republic of China describing Philippine activities near Bajo de Masinloc as a “self-directed farce,” asserting that the country’s maritime operations are lawful, routine, and aligned with its sovereign rights under international law.
In an official statement, the DND emphasized that Philippine actions in the disputed waters are legitimate exercises of jurisdiction, particularly in protecting national interests and ensuring access for local fisherfolk.
The agency criticized China’s remarks, saying the real issue lies in the continued harassment of Filipino fishermen by the People's Liberation Army Navy despite calls for peaceful engagement.
The department also pushed back against China’s criticism of the Philippines’ transparency strategy, noting that increased public disclosure of maritime incidents is necessary to counter misinformation.
It stressed that transparency exposes what it described as unlawful and coercive actions in the West Philippine Sea.
According to the DND, China’s actions have drawn growing international attention, contributing to what it called reputational damage for Beijing. The agency reiterated its commitment to defending Philippine sovereignty and continuing to document and report developments in the contested waters.
