The Department of National Defense (DND) on Monday extended its condolences to the families of four Philippine Air Force (PAF) pilots killed in a midair collision involving two trainer aircraft in Batangas.

In a statement, the DND said it mourned the loss of the pilots, whose service and sacrifice for the country would not be forgotten.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to their grieving families, loved ones, friends, and fellow airmen and women who share in this profound loss,” the department said.

The accident occurred at 3:51 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, when two SF-260 trainer aircraft collided midair and crashed within Fernando Air Base in Lipa City, Batangas.

The DND said an investigation was underway to establish the facts, determine the cause of the accident and identify any gaps requiring corrective action to prevent similar incidents.

The department also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and the safety of military personnel.

Following the crash, the PAF temporarily grounded all SF-260 aircraft as a precaution while investigators determined the cause of the accident.

The Air Force withheld the identities of the deceased pilots at their families’ request and pledged assistance to their bereaved relatives, while appealing to the public to respect their privacy.
