The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Thursday confirmed that 15 Filipino seafarers currently being held by Iranian forces remain safe and unharmed.

According to DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, the seafarers are aboard two container ships—Epaminondas and MSC Francesca—that were intercepted by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) while attempting to exit the Strait of Hormuz on April 22.

Ten Filipinos are on board the Epaminondas, while five are assigned to the MSC Francesca, both vessels were reportedly blocked by Iranian forces amid ongoing tensions and security measures in the vital shipping lane.

Cacdac assured the public that the government is closely monitoring the situation.

“We have been assured that all 15 seafarers are safe and unharmed. We remain in close coordination with their families, the manning agency, and shipowners, and continue to provide updates and support,” Cacdac said.

The agency added that the families of the affected seafarers have already been informed and are receiving continuous assistance.

The DMW also emphasized that the Philippine government is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and welfare of the seafarers while maintaining close coordination with relevant authorities.
