Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon surveyed the burning Navotas Sanitary Landfill in Navotas City on Tuesday.

The DPWH chief was accompanied by personnel of the Japan Disaster Relief Team technical group at the landfill in Barangay Tanza 2.

Among them was the Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Kazuyo Endo and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna, and Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco, according to the DPWH’s post.

The group came to examine the ongoing operations to extinguish the 18-day blaze and determine how the Japanese team may assist the government, as persistent fumes from the facility continues to affect the air quality in the area and in neighboring cities.

According to reports, 50 percent of the fire has already been put out.

The fire has affected around 90 percent of the 44-hectare facility, reports add.
