Ahead of Undas, or All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days, the sale of disposable plastic utensils and food containers for cemetery picnics have seen a notable surge at the Central Market at Sta. Cruz, Manila, according to a Wednesday report.
According to vendors, the spike in sales can be attributed to the Filipino tradition of packing food for gatherings at cemeteries for the occasion, reported RH 9 Tina Nolasco.
Most prefer using disposables for a quicker, more convenient clean-up afterwards.
Plastic plates cost P25 for 25 pieces, foil-topped square plates cost P20 a bundle, “kikiam plates” or small, foil-topped paper plates with a bundle of the biggest size costs P17, while disposable salad plates cost P85 a bundle, 100 pieces of sauce cups cost P100, and plastic spoons and forks can be bought by the kilo for P95.
Vendors in Central Market are also selling aluminium trays for P70 each, cling wrap for P35, and foil wrap for P30.
Vendors anticipate that the volume of customers will only increase as Undas nears.
