Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla has warned that local government executives who interfere or “epal” in the distribution of government aid and implementation of public programs will face suspension and criminal charges.
Speaking at a Malacañang press briefing, Remulla said the move is in line with provisions of the 2026 national budget, which prohibit politicians from taking part in social services programs to prevent politicization and abuse.
The DILG chief urged the public to report local officials seen inserting themselves in aid distribution, stressing that complaints may be filed with the Office of the Ombudsman for investigation and possible prosecution.
Remulla also said the DILG is studying the creation of a public reporting platform similar to the “Isumbong sa Pangulo” website to make it easier for citizens to report violations.
He added that it may be time to pass a law clearly defining prohibited acts and corresponding penalties to curb the practice of politicians using government assistance programs for personal or political gain.
