The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) called on local government units (LGUs) and residents living close to Taal Volcano and Mt. Kanlaon to remain vigilant amid volcanic activity.

“LGUs are directed to activate their Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (LDRRMCs), preposition emergency supplies, and ensure the readiness and safety of evacuation centers. Continuous coordination with PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) and concerned local authorities is strongly urged,” the DILG said, following Mt. Kanlaon’s October 24 eruption.

Kanlaon remains at Alert Level 2, which means it is experiencing moderate unrest, and further ash emissions or short-lived explosions can be expected. Locals residing within the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone have been instructed to stay in evacuation centers, while those within 6 kilometers of the summit should be on full alert, DILG said.

The agency also instructed LGUs in Batangas and Cavite to implement critical preparedness measures, with Taal Volcano still at Alert Level 1 after two minor phreatomagmatic eruptions at its main crater on October 26.

LGUs were reminded to prohibit entry into Taal Volcano Island, particularly the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissure. Furthermore, they are to anticipate potential increases in volcanic sulfur dioxide and so carry out proper health measures for the public’s protection.

On the locals’ part, the DILG has urged them to follow health precautions, such as wearing N95 masks, shielding eyes from ash particles, and staying hydrated. Having Go Bags ready is also recommended; it should contain water, food, clothing, protective equipment, first aid kits, and essential medicines.
