The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is set to file cases before the Office of the Ombudsman against sevaral local government officials, mostly mayors who left the country amid Super Typhoon Uwan struck the Philippines.
In an ambush interview at Camp Crame, DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla revealed that the complaints against the officials include abandonment of duty, gross neglect, and insubordination.
“Halos kumpleto na. We will file the correspondent cases sa Ombudsman,” Remulla said, noting that the DILG is gathering the necessary information to strengthen the complaints, such as flight details of the officials.
The controversy stems from Memorandum Circular No. 2025-110, issued on November 8, 2025, which suspended all official and personal foreign travel for local government officials and employees from November 9 to 15, 2025, in anticipation of Typhoons Tino and Uwan.
According to Remulla, 24 officials left the country despite the travel suspension and now under investigation.
He assured the public that those found in violation of the directive will face appropriate sanctions following the ongoing investigation.
The DILG confirmed that the cases to be filed will include "abandonment of duty, gross neglect, and insubordination."
It can be recalled that the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), citing updates from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), reported that 27 people have died as a result of Uwan.
