The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has directed the Philippine National Police (PNP) to exercise maximum tolerance during a rally held by members of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) along EDSA on Tuesday, June 30.
“In connection with the Iglesia ni Cristo rally along EDSA, the DILG has directed the Philippine National Police, in close coordination with the concerned local government unit, to exercise maximum tolerance and implement appropriate security and traffic management measures to help ensure that the activity remains peaceful, orderly, and safe for all,” the agency said.
The DILG also reiterated its respect for the constitutional right of Filipinos to peacefully assemble and express their views, while reminding rally participants “to exercise their rights responsibly, uphold the rule of law, and cooperate with authorities” throughout the event.
“The Department said it remains committed to protecting public safety while upholding the constitutional freedoms of every Filipino,“ it said.
The rally began with a pre-dawn assembly at the EDSA People Power Monument, where INC expressed support for Senator Rodante Marcoleta and opposed the possible filing of charges against him.
The INC described the potential legal action as a distortion of the law intended to conceal alleged corruption.
Authorities said the gathering led to temporary road closures and significant traffic congestion in parts of Metro Manila, particularly around EDSA.
