A workers’ group staged a protest Friday at a DHL outlet along Timog Avenue, Quezon City, calling on the logistics company to resume negotiations with its employees amid a wage dispute that has put the jobs of 436 Filipino workers at risk.
According to a report by RH Val Gonzales, the protest was organized by Akbayan Youth and SENTRO as the DHL United Workers Union entered its fifth day of strike. The strike began Monday, Aug. 17, according to the groups.
The workers are seeking a resolution to a deadlock in negotiations for their collective bargaining agreement, or CVA, which covers employees of the DHL Supply Chain warehouse in Muntinlupa City.
The groups also accused DHL management of union busting, alleging that the company has taken actions aimed at weakening the workers’ union amid the labor dispute.
Akbayan Youth Chair Khylla Meneses said forming a union should not be treated as an obstacle to business operations, but as a fundamental right of workers.
The group called on DHL management to stop what it described as suppression of workers, respect the union and return to the negotiating table.
It said the dispute could affect the livelihood of more than 400 workers whose jobs are allegedly at risk if the deadlock remains unresolved.
DHL is one of the world’s largest logistics companies, with operations in the Philippines.
The company is yet to respond to the allegations and the workers’ demands.
