MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Tuesday the participation of the Philippines to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), as the country will reaffirm its strong commitment to “multilateralism and a rules-based order.”

Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro will the lead the Philippine delegation during the UNGA High-Level Week, slated from 21 to 27 September 2025 in New York, U.S.A.

“She will highlight the Philippines’ role in addressing complex challenges as well as the country’s call for a stronger UN - one that promotes peace, security, climate action, migrant protection, and sustainable development,” the DFA said in a statement.

Lazaro, with other officials from the Philippine government, will engage in high-level discussions on critical issues, including Artificial Intelligence, climate financing, migration, biodiversity, and maritime security, the DFA confirmed.

“She will also meet with foreign ministers to strengthen bilateral and multilateral ties, promoting Philippine interests and advancing national priorities,” the DFA added.

The Philippine delegation is also expected to “ramp up” efforts to pursue the country’s bid for a non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council for the term 2027-2028.

The 80th session of the UNGA, under the theme “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development, and human rights,” comes at a pivotal moment to renew global commitment to multilateralism, solidarity and shared action for people and planet, according to the UN website.

According to the UN website, two key platforms will spotlight action and solutions: the flagship SDG Media Zone produced by the UN Department of Global Communications with dynamic interviews and panel discussions on SDG solutions held from 22–26 September; and the Goals Lounge, convened by the UN Deputy Secretary-General and hosted by the UN Office for Partnerships from 20-26 September, featuring unscripted dialogues, deep dives into vital issues and interactive experiences.

The UN website confirmed that all events are live streamed on UN WebTV.
