The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) allayed concerns over the deployment of nearly 12,000 soldiers and Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) personnel in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

According to the AFP, the heightened military presence in the region is not an act of “militarization” ahead of the region’s historic parliamentary elections on Sept. 14.
