The Department of Education (DepEd) announced on Thursday morning that it will urgently resolve classroom shortages in the Philippines.
With the leadership of DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara, the organization is determined to address the 165,000 classroom shortage with "urgency and efficiency”.
The project is through partnership with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), as they plan to adopt disaster-resilient designs and construct more classrooms across the country.
The DPWH will directly receive the funds for handing from procurement to actual construction.
However, it may be recalled that Senator Bam Aquino, Chairperson of the Committee on Basic Education, questioned the huge discrepancy in costs of building school classrooms between those built by the private sector and funded by the government.
He also revealed that the DPWH prices each classroom at around P2.5 million to P3.8 million, while non-government organizations are around P1.5 million to P2 million.
Furthermore, it was previously reported that Education is the highest sector to receive the biggest allocations under the proposed National Expenditure Program for 2026.
