The Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Office VIII expressed “deep concern” over the shooting incident that occurred in San Jose National High School, Tacloban City on Monday, June 22, and assured that they have promptly tapped the Philippine National Police (PNP), and other key agencies to support those affected.

“Immediately upon receiving information about the incident, DepEd Regional Office VIII coordinated closely with the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Schools Division Office of Tacloban City, and school authorities to ensure the safety and security of learners, teaching and non-teaching personnel, and all individuals within the school premises,” DepEd wrote in a statement.

The regional office added that it also coordinated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and other relevant agencies to provide the necessary assistance and psychosocial support services for affected students.

In addition, DepEd Regional Office VIII said the incident is currently being investigated by the police, appealing to the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and instead rely on official statements released by authorized agencies.

“The safety, security, and well-being of our learners and personnel remain our highest priority. DepEd Regional Office VIII is committed to providing the necessary support to the affected school community and to working closely with partner agencies to ensure that schools remain safe, secure, and conducive spaces for learning,” the regional office said.

On Monday, two minors, aged 14 and 15, opened fire at a classroom in San Jose National High School, killing at least three and causing injuries in at least seven others, according to the PNP.
