The Department of Education (DepEd) expressed deep sorrow over the death of a Grade 3 learner from Lapulapu Elementary School in Agdao District, Davao City, following a reported incident involving an altercation among students.

The learner reportedly died after being struck on the head by a notebook during the confrontation. Authorities are now looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In an official statement, DepEd said: “The Department of Education is deeply saddened by the passing of a Grade 3 learner from Lapulapu Elementary School in Agdao District, Davao City. We extend our deepest sympathies to the learner’s family and loved ones.”

The agency added that the DepEd Regional Office XI, the Schools Division of Davao City, and the school administration are coordinating with authorities regarding the reported incident and providing assistance to the bereaved family. Psychosocial support is also being extended to affected learners and school personnel.

DepEd also emphasized that appropriate child protection and administrative processes are being carried out in accordance with the law while ensuring due process and protecting the rights of all children involved.

“We respectfully ask the public to allow the investigation to proceed and await the official findings,” DepEd said, while urging the public to refrain from spreading speculation or unverified information that may cause further distress to the bereaved family, the children involved, and the school community.

The education agency assured that it remains committed to upholding learner safety and strengthening child protection measures in schools.
