The Department of Education (DepEd) on Sunday clarified that its proposed 2026 funds for the Child Protection Program is in the millions—not billions.
Instead of ₱89.9 billion, the department made it clear that the program has only been allocated ₱89.9 million.
The said program is expected to yield various preventive measures, such as devising policies, session guides, and exercises in reinforcing safeguards on students’ rights and providing personnel under the department the means and tools necessary in addressing student concerns, in line with strict adherence to protocols and guidelines.
Previously, it was reported that Education Secretary Sonny Angara asked for ₱89.9 million in funds to launch the Child Protection Program in response to the alarming surge in incidents of violence in schools.
As of writing, there have been numerous cases of stabbings and shootings among students in schools across the country.
In June, two adolescents carrying firearms opened fire at a classroom in Tacloban City, resulting in the deaths of three and injuries in 20 other individuals.
Just recently, an eighth-grade student fatally shot a tenth grader before taking his own life in Zamboanga City.
