The Department of Education (DepEd) expressed condolences to the family, colleagues, and students of Teacher Agnes Buenaflor of Pedro E. Diaz High School in Muntinlupa City, who reportedly collapsed and died on Wednesday, January 7, while undergoing a classroom observation.

In a statement, the agency said it is coordinating with the school and the family to provide assistance, including psychosocial support for affected students and staff.

DepEd clarified that classroom observations are intended to support professional growth and shared learning, and are no longer the sole basis for evaluating teacher performance. Other factors are now considered in assessing teachers.

“Classroom observation is meant to support teacher growth and shared learning and should be conducted in a supportive, respectful manner,” the agency emphasized. “It is not intended to create undue pressure.”

The department said it continues to review policies related to classroom observation and encourages input from teachers.
