National team newcomer and food-delivery rider, Zedrick Ivan Honorica, made history at the 2026 Asian Track and Para Track Cycling Championships after breaking the 20-year-old Philippine record in the men’s elite 200-meter sprint.
Honorica clocked 10.865 seconds at the Tagaytay City Velodrome, eclipsing the long-standing national mark of 11.424 seconds set by Jan Paul Morales at the 2006 Doha Asian Games.
The feat was made more remarkable by Honorica’s unconventional journey and equipment. He only joined the national team in January after walking into open tryouts he discovered on social media.
The 21-year-old cyclist competed using a modest setup he used as a delivery rider — a P2,500 bike frame and wheelset worth about P12,500 — funded through his earnings as a delivery rider.
Facing competitors with high-end racing bikes worth millions, Honorica relied on grit and raw speed, having honed his skills through informal sprint races before entering organized competition.
Also delivering for the Philippines, paracyclist Patrick Gerard Lee secured a bronze medal in the men’s C5 10-kilometer scratch race, earning valuable qualification points toward the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
