Senator Ronald ‘Bato’ dela Rosa’s camp is set to file a petition for a writ of amparo before the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday, May 12, according to his legal counsel, Atty. Jimmy Bondoc.
In an interview with the reporters, Bondoc said the camp is also preparing to seek a writ of habeas corpus should the International Criminal Court (ICC) secure custody of his client in the future, according to a report by RH Jecelle Ricafort.
“God only knows,” Bondoc said when asked about what may happen next in the legal process.
“What our job is as lawyers to make sure that first of all we file the necessary petitions. Mayroon kaming dalawa so far, ‘yung writ of amparo at mayroon kaming ad cautelam at kung saka-sakali lang makuha siya, mag-habeas corpus kami,” he added.
Bondoc also raised concerns over what he described as a “spurious” copy of an ICC arrest warrant circulating publicly, saying the legal team wants the document thoroughly scrutinized.
He further claimed that, based on reports from their side, the ICC warrant has allegedly been “transformed” into a local warrant, although the camp said it does not have any official copy in its possession.
When asked how long dela Rosa would remain in the Senate, Bondoc said they would await the decision of the SC.
He also advised the former Philippine National Police chief under the Duterte administration to remain inside the Senate premises, stressing that it is not intended as a form of evasion but as a way to assert Philippine sovereignty.
“As one of his lawyers, I advised him to stay inside not at all to hide from any accountability but to preserve the sovereignty of the Philippines,” Bondoc said.
On dela Rosa’s condition, Bondoc said the senator has remained calm and is now eating properly.
“Kahit papaano may mga light engagements na siya in conversation pero hindi naman kami nagtatawanan kasi there’s nothing to laugh about. They were eating already; it’s supposed that it’s a good sign,” he added.
