Former Congressman Mike Defensor has raised concerns over the plunder case filed against him and Senator Rodante Marcoleta before the Sandiganbayan, questioning what he described as inconsistencies in the application of legal standards involving campaign donations and alleged corruption cases.
In a Facebook post, Defensor argued that the charges were based on campaign contributions and insisted that no public funds were involved in the transactions cited in the complaint.
"The filing of the plunder case against me and Sen. Dante Marcoleta before the Sandiganbayan raises one fundamental question: ano na ba talaga ang pamantayan ng batas ngayon?" Defensor said.
He further maintained that no government money was stolen and that no favor was promised in exchange for the donation cited in the case.
"The accusation is anchored on campaign donations. Yet there was no government fund involved. Nothing was stolen from the public treasury. No favor was requested, promised, or given in exchange for any donation," he added.
Defensor also questioned how campaign donations could be used as a basis for plunder charges, while calling for what he described as equal scrutiny across political figures.
He cited public records involving campaign donations made to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., referring to contributions from individuals who were later appointed to government positions, stressing that he was not alleging illegality but pointing to what he described as factual circumstances.
"If campaign donations are now being used as the basis for a plunder case, then these circumstances deserve at least the same level of scrutiny and investigation. The law cannot have one standard for political opponents and another for political allies," he said.
Defensor rejected what he called “selective justice,” insisting he would face the charges in court while maintaining confidence in his position.
"I will face these charges before the proper courts because I know the truth is on our side. I have nothing to hide and nothing to fear," he said.
"I will not be silenced," he added.
The filing of the plunder case was previously reported following the Ombudsman’s action before the Sandiganbayan involving Marcoleta and other respondents.
