Defense counsel Kristine Ferrer on Monday clarified that the ₱256,882.50 Nike purchase charged to the credit card of Manases “Mans” Carpio, husband of Vice President Sara Duterte, was intended for his son’s basketball team.
During the cross-examination of forensic financial analyst Alexander Cabrera at Duterte’s impeachment trial, Ferrer asked whether the witness knew that the purchase at Nike Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia covered sports apparel and other items for the team.
“Are you aware that this credit card belongs to Manases Carpio, sir?” Ferrer asked.
“Opo,” Cabrera replied.
"Are you aware that the purchases that were made therein was for the purpose of providing sports apparel and other items to the baskeball team of his son?“ Ferrer then asked Cabrera.
“Not aware po,” Cabrera said.
The defense noted that the transaction had been mentioned by Cabrera during the proceedings last Friday, Oct. 9.
Ferrer also questioned Cabrera about a separate credit card expense for a meal, saying the payment was made for a large group traveling with Carpio because some of his companions did not have Japanese yen with them.
“Are you aware that this expense or this expenses pertain to expenses incurred of a large group with Manases Carpio while he was travelling with this companion,” Ferrer asked Cabrera.
Cabrera, however, acknowledged that the meal expense appeared to involve a large group, noting that the amount was too much for one person to consume alone.
“I assume po it's a large group, hindi po kayang kainin ng isang tao eh,” Cabrera said.
Ferrer asked: “Are you aware that the cost was for a group and that it's because the people with Carpio had no yen?”
“I’m not aware po,” Cabrera said.
