Defense counsel Michael Poa said Wednesday he is willing to testify in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte next week, after prosecutors asked the Senate impeachment court to call him as a witness.

Poa made the statement before the trial adjourned Wednesday, Aug. 26, saying he saw no reason to oppose the prosecution's request at this point.

However, he said he would first consult with the rest of Duterte's defense team and await the court's ruling before giving a categorical response.

“I don't see any reason to oppose at this point. Of course, I'm speaking for myself as a spokesperson. I need to discuss this also with the rest of the team,” Poa said.

He added that the defense would comply with the court's ruling should it decide to allow the prosecution to present him as a witness.

Poa said they are also preparing for the possibility of appointing a new spokesperson, as prosecutors have asked the impeachment court to present him as a witness in the trial.

He said the defense has yet to select his replacement but recognizes the need to designate a new spokesperson should he take the witness stand.

The defense counsel added that their team is looking for someone who can “laymanize,” or explain in simpler terms, the impeachment proceedings and the defense's position so the public can better understand the case.

The replacement does not necessarily have to be a lawyer, Poa said, noting that non-lawyers can also communicate effectively with the public.
