The number of fatalities from the sunken M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 in Basilan climbed to 58, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said in an update on Monday, February 16.

The PCG technical divers recovered one cadaver during their underwater operations, increasing the current death toll. As of writing, the number of survivors remains at 293, while 21 individuals remain missing.

According to the PCG, the figures were consolidated through the joint validation of the following agencies: the Philippine National Police-Scene of the Crime Operatives (PNP-SOCO), the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), and the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM). In addition, the PCG included the affected families who conduct daily coordination with interagency and rescue authorities.

On Saturday, the PCG said in an update that one more body was also recovered from the sunken RoRo vessel in Basilan, making the fatalities 53.

Meanwhile, during the Senate Committee on Public Services hearing, a survivor of the capsized vessel detailed his experience during the tragedy, stating that several life vests were substandard.
