Three days before Valentine’s Day, the Manila City Government officially opened the Dangwa Flower Park in Sampaloc, aiming to provide a more organized and accessible space for flower vendors and customers during one of the busiest seasons for the trade.
Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, joined by Hawkers Director Raffy Alejandro, underscoring the city’s continued support for small entrepreneurs and street vendors whose livelihoods depend on seasonal demand and daily foot traffic.
The Dangwa area has long been known as the country’s primary flower market, drawing buyers from across Metro Manila and nearby provinces, especially during occasions such as Valentine’s Day, All Saints’ Day, and graduations. The new park is intended to improve crowd flow, safety, and the overall buying experience while helping vendors operate in a more orderly environment.
Raffy Oronan, president of the Dangwa vendors’ association, expressed gratitude for the city government’s presence and support. He also appealed for the installation of roofing over the stalls to protect both customers and flowers from heat and rain, noting that weather exposure often affects the quality and lifespan of their products.
City officials said the project forms part of Manila’s broader efforts to upgrade traditional vending areas into safer, more structured spaces without displacing long-time vendors, particularly during peak commercial periods like the Valentine’s Day rush.
