The Court of Appeals has issued a freeze order on the assets of former House Speaker Martin Romualdez in connection with an investigation into alleged irregularities in flood control projects, Ombudsman Boying Remulla confirmed in a radio interview Saturday.

Remulla confirmed in DZRH’s Executive Session that the subject of the order was Romualdez, who previously served as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“Si Former Speaker Martin Romualdez, [may] freeze order na," the ombudsman said.

According to Remulla, the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) had secured the court order covering 25 bank accounts and 10 insurance policies registered under the name of the unnamed legislator, later identified in the interview as Romualdez.

“Doon talaga dinadala ang freeze orders ng AMLC, Anti-Money Laundering Council. Diyan talaga sila kukuha ng court order,” Remulla said, adding that such orders are obtained by the AMLC through the appellate court with the Solicitor General acting as counsel for the state.

The AMLC had earlier confirmed that it obtained a freeze order against a sitting member of Congress but did not initially disclose the lawmaker’s identity.

The freeze order is part of an ongoing investigation linked to alleged anomalies in flood control projects. Remulla said additional cases related to the same matter are being prepared.

“Actually, isang kaso pa lang yan. Pero we have around five to six cases lined up. Sunod-sunod siya i-file within the next two weeks,” he said, without providing further details.

He added that the current case is still under preliminary investigation and that due process is being observed.

“Ang kalaban namin dito, akusado sa pagnanakaw sa gobyerno. Ito, tiga gobyerno ito. Ito, maraming pera. May kapangyarihan. Hindi ho madali labanan ito,” Remulla said.
