In an exclusive interview on Point of View on DZRH TV, Bicol Saro Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon shared that the House of Representatives is simultaneously addressing rising fuel costs and escalating political tensions, as lawmakers push for economic relief measures while advancing impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Fuel Tax Suspension Bill Advances
A measure granting emergency powers to President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to suspend fuel excise taxes has passed second reading.
According to Ridon, the move could significantly ease pump prices. “Kapag natanggal ang excise tax sa diesel, gasolina at kerosene… puwedeng bumaba ng mga ₱6 hanggang ₱10 kada litro,” he said.
However, he noted that the reduction may not be immediate due to existing fuel stocks that have already been taxed.
Transport groups continue to feel the impact of rising oil prices, with some drivers reporting reduced earnings or halting operations.
Ridon stressed the urgency of government intervention: “Dapat hindi na hintayin… kailangan immediately makapag-release ng fuel subsidy sa mga kababayan natin.”
He added that assistance should cover not only drivers but also fishermen and logistics operators.
Global oil prices continue to rise amid tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. While the Philippines is not directly involved, the economic impact is immediate, with higher fuel prices affecting consumers nationwide.
Impeachment Case vs Duterte Progresses
The House Justice Committee has declared two impeachment complaints against Vice President Duterte sufficient in substance, allowing proceedings to move forward.
Ridon explained that this means the case will now proceed to hearings: “Ibig sabihin nito, tatawid na sa hearing proper ang impeachment proceedings.”
Duterte has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated.
The impeachment process will now involve the presentation of evidence and testimonies, with a target timeline set by lawmakers.
“Meron kaming palugit na 16 session days para tapusin ang proseso,” Ridon said, adding that proceedings may conclude by May.
Despite controversies surrounding Congress itself, Ridon emphasized the importance of due process: “Kung may kaso, dapat kasuhan… kailangan harapin ng mga opisyal ang mga alegasyon laban sa kanila.”
Lawmakers maintain that impeachment remains a constitutional mechanism to ensure accountability among top officials and must be carried out with due process.
