The Lawyers for Commuters Safety and Protection (LCSP) urged the government to release and distribute the promised fuel subsidies to all public transport drivers nationwide, citing their ongoing struggle with high fuel prices.

During the ongoing fare hike petition hearings of various public transport groups, LCSP President Atty. Ariel Inton emphasized that implementing a fuel subsidy would be better than allowing further fare increases, RH Val Gonzales reported.

"Anumang pagtaas ng bilihin o pasahe ay hindi ay hindi maganda sa pagdinig ng commuters dahil dagdag gastos 'yan," he said.

"On the other hand, alam natin 'yung hirap sa transport system. Lumalabas na hindi sila unanimous...'Yung iba sa kanila ang sabi kahit itaas natin 'yan sa dami ng colorom wala ring mangyayari dahil ang pasahe sa legal, tataas din ang pasahe ng colorum," he added.

At the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) hearing, various transport sectors—jeepney, taxi, and TNVS (Transport Network Vehicle Services)—explained why fare hikes are necessary.

They reported daily losses of ₱700 to ₱900, directly affecting their families.

The group Pasang Masda filed a separate petition for a modest fare increase of ₱5.

Three other groups also asked the LTFRB to regulate the number of TNVS, such as motorcycle taxis, in Metro Manila, claiming oversupply has negatively impacted their earnings.

The presence of motor taxis has reportedly been abused due to the large number of unauthorized units, which has significantly impacted their earnings.

Meanwhile, LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II led the hearing session, as PISTON staged a protest outside the LTFRB Extension Office on Kalayaan Avenue, Quezon City.

Inton noted that in June 2023, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. announced a ₱2.5 billion fuel subsidy for eligible drivers nationwide. However, this did not push through as fuel prices had dropped by then.
