The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has expressed its full cooperation with the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) in the ongoing investigation into candidates who allegedly received campaign donations from government contractors.
COMELEC Chairman George Garcia said the poll body is prepared to turn over all pieces of evidence that may help hold both contractors and candidates accountable.
Garcia assured that the COMELEC would immediately comply with ICI’s requests, emphasizing that the commission recognizes ICI’s mandate to investigate corruption and file cases against those found responsible.
He added that once the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) confirms that the donors were indeed government contractors, the COMELEC is ready to make the information public.
Under Section 95(c) of the Omnibus Election Code, it is unlawful for government contractors to contribute to election campaigns. Violators may face criminal charges, and the same evidence may also be used by other government agencies for possible administrative cases.
Garcia further revealed that 26 government contractors are being investigated for allegedly supporting candidates in the 2025 elections, including four incumbent senators who were reportedly among the recipients of such donations.
