The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) announced on Wednesday, January 28, that it is mourning the passing of its former Spokesperson and Director IV of the Education and Information Department, James Jimenez. He was 52 years old.
In a social media post, the poll body said that Jimenez holds the rare distinction of having been the longest-serving and youngest spokesperson in government at the time of his appointment. Moreover, Jimenez helped bridge the communication gap between the poll body and the public through pioneering its official social media channels for queries and concerns.
“He championed accuracy, transparency, and accessibility, often translating legal and technical matters into language the public could understand. In doing so, he strengthened public trust in the electoral process and modeled how principled communication can serve democracy,” the COMELEC said.
Beyond his role as spokesperson, the poll body said that Jimenez was known for his sense of humor and humanity, even during challenging periods of the election.
“COMELEC extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and loved ones. We honor his legacy of public service and his enduring contribution to election transparency and voter education. His voice, professionalism, and quiet courage will be remembered,” the caption read.
