The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) will not intervene in the selection of the next chief minister of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), scheduled for Friday, October 30.
In the report by RH Tina Nolasco, COMELEC Chairman George Garcia said the vote is an internal matter among members of the Bangsamoro Parliament elected during the region’s first parliamentary elections on September 14.
Meanwhile, veteran election lawyer Romy Macalintal expressed hope that political parties’ decisions would prevail in choosing the next chief minister.
Macalintal explained that under BARMM’s parliamentary system, the mandate centers on political party platforms rather than individual personalities.
He warned that parliament members who defy their parties’ consensus could face serious sanctions, including expulsion and possible forfeiture of their seats in parliament.
