The roar of the crowd returned to the Victoria Sports Tower in Quezon City as MPL Philippines Season 17 officially kicked off Week 1.
In a high-stakes opening match that lived up to the hype, defending champions Team Liquid Philippines sent a clear message to the league by defeating the reigning M7 World Champions, Aurora Gaming PH.
A Clash of Titans
The series was a tactical chess match that saw both teams flaunting revamped rosters and evolving playstyles.
Team Liquid’s Kim ‘Daiki’ Sebanes emerged as a breakout star, commanding the Gold Lane with a stellar 5-1-5 KDA. Despite being a newcomer to the professional stage, Daiki showed zero intimidation against veteran marksman specialist Dominic "Domeng" Del Mundo.
"Gusto ko kasi makita ang gigil siya maglaro eh. Ayoko nung minamalate niya ako so gusto ko ibigay niya din yung 100% niya kaya pinagtitimpihan ko siya," Daiki told MBC TV Sports, regarding his aggressive stance.
Meanwhile, Aurora Gaming PH showcased their deep hero pool early on, surprising fans with a Balmond jungle pick in Game 1 and a Lesley in Game 3.
However, Aurora’s head coach, Aniel “Master the Basics” Jiandani, admitted that their downfall was failing to contain the relentless pressure from Liquid's star jungler, KarlTzy.
"I think kailangan talaga namin mapigilan si Karl kasi I think... Nung napigilan namin siya nung Game 2, sobrang naging dominating nung team. Nung Game 1 and Game 3, talagang sobrang laki na naging lead niya. So medyo nahihirapan talaga kami sa ginawa niya," Coach Jiandani noted.
For KarlTzy, the victory was a testament to the team's new identity. Known historically for a patient, objective-based "turtle fight" style, Liquid PH debuted a blistering, fast-paced offensive that caught Aurora off guard.
The series saw a brief shift in momentum during Game 2, where Aurora’s roamer Light delivered a masterclass on Grock, securing a win to tie the series.
However, Liquid’s Sanji slammed the door shut in Game 3, earning MVP honors with a 5-1-7 KDA on Zhuxin, preventing the reverse sweep and securing the match for the "Cavalry."
The "Golden" Reveal
At the close of Week 1, Team Liquid PH (The Cavalry) sits at the top of the standings with a +3 net game score, closely followed by AP BREN.
Beyond the matches, Moonton Games announced a historic collaboration with international jewelry brand Fairrie to introduce the first-ever MPL Philippines Championship Ring.
Fairrie CEO Julius See expressed that the ring is a tribute to the undisputed dominance of Filipino MLBB players on the world stage. "Filipino players are true champions; they've proven it for years. It’s an honor for Fairrie to be part of this," See remarked.
The news was met with excitement—and a bit of humor—from the league’s veterans.
"Eh, sobrang dami ko ng champion. Wala pa rin ring dito. Nakakainggit sa ibang bansa na lagi may ring eh. Kaya yan, masaya," KarlTzy said.
The MPL Philippines Season 17 regular season continues its action-packed run at the Victoria Sports Tower until May 17.
