The government offices and frontline agencies in the City of Manila are in High Alert Status following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that shook General Santos City in Mindanao on Monday, June 8.
In a directional meeting, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso mobilized the Office of the Building Official, Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Manila Department of Social Welfare, Department of Engineering and Public Works, Manila Police District, at Schools Division Office–Manila to conduct prompt inspections of public buildings, schools, and other critical facilities in the city.
According to Mayor Domagoso, this is part of regular preparations conducted whenever a powerful earthquake hits any part of the country, even if it strikes an area far from Metro Manila.
He also tasked key government offices to prepare in case a response team needs to be sent to General Santos City.
The mayor emphasized that this move aims to ensure the safety of the public and preparedness of the city government in case of aftershocks, tremors, or other emergency situations.
“Patuloy namang pinapaalalahanan ang mga Manileño na manatiling alerto, kalmado, at sumunod sa mga abiso ng mga awtoridad,” the Manila Public Information Office said in a statement.
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck General Santos City at 7:37 a.m. on Monday, prompting tsunami warnings across parts of Mindanao and forcing evacuations.
