A trapeze artist fell to her death in the middle of a performance at Circus Paul Busch in Brautzen, eastern Germany, on Saturday.
German media reported that the circus acrobat plunged from a height of around 5 meters—like a drop from a two-story building—before an audience of 80 people, including children. Screams could be heard as people fled the circus tent and parents covered their children’s eyes.
The performer, aged 27 and believed to have hailed from Spain, did not survive the injuries sustained from the fall. She died at the scene after the incident at about 5:45 p.m.
The children in the audience are currently receiving psychological support.
The circus opened the night before the incident, on Friday, and was set to continue until October 5, but the circus tent was dismantled on Monday.
Police told the press that the acrobat was not using a safety rope and was not required to. Her death has been classified as an industrial accident with the absence of evidence indicating third-party negligence, as performers usually assemble their own equipment.
