In an interview on the program Expert's Opinion, Dr. Bong Tuazon, Pediatric Surgeon from Asian Hospital and Medical Center, emphasized that circumcision is primarily performed for medical reasons rather than as a rite of passage into manhood, especially as the annual circumcision season begins during the summer break.
“Ang kadalasang dahilan o indikasyon ng pagtutuli, it’s more on the medical perspective," he said.
He noted that the procedure provides several health benefits for boys and explained that the foreskin can trap residual urine, creating an environment where bacteria can thrive and multiply, which may eventually lead to urinary tract infections (UTIs).
“Ang residual urine ay isang magandang culture o media para sa bacteria na tumubo, mag-multiply, and eventually lead to UTI,” Tuazon said.
He added that circumcision helps expose the head of the penis and may prevent such complications.
While circumcision is often associated with the transition to manhood, Tuazon stressed that its greatest benefit lies in promoting proper hygiene and reducing the risk of certain medical conditions.
