The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has announced that it will issue subpoenas to Smart Communications representatives and Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Roberto C. Yap as part of its ongoing investigation into the deaths of varsity players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

CIDG Director PMGen. Robert Alexander Morico II said authorities are looking into the structure of the Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball program, which is reportedly funded by Smart Communications and described as “autonomous,” raising questions about oversight and accountability during team activities.

Morico noted that even the vehicle used by head coach Tab Baldwin during the team’s trip to a resort in Dipaculao, Aurora—where the alleged team-building activity took place—was reportedly provided by Smart, suggesting possible coordination or approval from the corporate sponsor.

“We’ve been also confirming this statement to the rector of Ateneo, the president of Ateneo, Fr Roberto C. Yap, that’s why we will be issuing subpoena sa kanya,” Morico said.

He added that there is a possibility that previous training activities conducted by the team in Aurora may have been sanctioned by Smart Communications.

Earlier, CIDG had also issued a subpoena to Baldwin and other top officials of the Blue Eagles program, although the head coach failed to appear before investigators.

Former Ateneo players are scheduled to face the CIDG on Thursday, while 22 current team members are set to appear on Wednesday as part of the ongoing probe.

Authorities are also coordinating with individuals identifying themselves as Baldwin’s family members, who previously made social media statements alleging misconduct involving the American-New Zealand coach.

The CIDG said at least seven individuals are currently being considered as persons of interest as the investigation continues.
