The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) on Tuesday announced the lifting of the nationwide ban on Grok AI following commitments from its developer, xAI, to modify the platform to meet Philippine regulations.
CICC Undersecretary Renato “Aboy” Paraiso said the ban, imposed on January 16, was triggered by concerns over the tool’s ability to generate nonconsensual deepfakes and sexually explicit content that posed risks to women and minors. The National Telecommunications Commission had blocked access to the app within 24 hours of the request.
Paraiso said xAI has agreed to remove content and image manipulation features that enable deepfake creation and to completely exclude pornographic content, particularly child sexual abuse material, for the local version of the platform.
Despite the lifting of the ban, the CICC said it will continue to closely monitor Grok AI’s compliance with Philippine laws and protocols. A formal meeting between the CICC and xAI is expected to finalize the terms for the tool’s resumption in the country, as the agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s cyberspace.
