House Prosecutor Rep. Joel Chua said Monday that former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV could provide testimony in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, particularly on bank records that allegedly match information in reports from the Anti-Money Laundering Council.
Speaking on DZRH’s Dos Por Dos, Chua said Trillanes had previously released details about alleged bank transactions that were initially dismissed as false or unverified claims.
Chua said lawmakers later compared the information disclosed by Trillanes with documents presented during a committee hearing and found that some details matched AMLC reports.
“Napakaganda rin ng magiging salaysay ni Senator Trillanes kapag siya na ay sinalang dito sa witness stand,” Chua said.
Asked how Trillanes could be considered a credible witness since he was neither an AMLC official nor a bank employee, Chua said it would be better to wait for his testimony and hear what evidence he would present.
“Mas maganda na antayin natin na siya ay sumalang,” Chua said.
Chua added that he would be cautious about discussing the substance of Trillanes’ potential testimony because of the Rule 18 sub judice policy enforced by the Senate impeachment court.
The policy bars public comments on the merits of Duterte’s impeachment trial. The Senate impeachment court has previously issued show-cause orders to members of both the Defense and House prosecution panels over public statements concerning the case.
