House Prosecutor and Manila 3rd District Representative Joel Chua said he expected the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office to dismiss the complaint filed by Vice President Sara Duterte’s husband, Atty. Mans Carpio, over the disclosure of their bank records.
Speaking at the House prosecution panel’s press conference on Wednesday, September 9, Chua maintained that the complaint had no legal basis and was filed merely to harass members of the prosecution amid the ongoing impeachment trial.
“Well, inaasahan naman natin na ito'y talagang maliwanag na madi-dismiss dahil unang-una ito'y maliwanag na harassment lamang sa amin sa paggawa ng aming o sa pagtupad ng aming tungkulin.”
Chua said the disclosure was made in the course of their official duties during a committee hearing, arguing that lawmakers are covered by parliamentary immunity for acts performed in the discharge of their functions.
He also questioned how agreeing with a motion during a congressional hearing could constitute a criminal offense.
Chua welcomed the expected dismissal of the complaint, saying it would not distract the House prosecution team from its work in the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Duterte.
