Central Luzon authorities reported a total of 140 incidents during Semana Santa 2026, including 67 vehicular accidents and 14 drowning cases, according to Philippine National Police (PNP) Police Regional Office Director PBGEN Jess B. Mendez.

Despite the presence of numerous police units deployed across the region, these numbers remain among the highest ever recorded during Holy Week, reflecting the challenges of ensuring public safety amid increased travel and religious activities.

Mendez emphasized that the police continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further incidents.

Among the most alarming events was a theft inside the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of San Miguel Arcangel, where antique religious statues were stolen.

Authorities described the case as one of the most serious incidents of the holiday period. The PNP, together with the regional command, is conducting an intensified investigation to recover the stolen items and hold the perpetrators accountable.

The report highlights the need for heightened vigilance and stricter enforcement of safety protocols during major holidays, as police and local authorities continue to balance crowd management, accident prevention, and the protection of cultural and religious sites.
