Valentine’s Day… For some, it’s all about candlelit dinners, roses, and couple selfies. But let’s be real—love comes in all shapes and sizes. You don’t need a date to make February 14 special. Whether it’s Galentine’s Day with your besties or a solo self-care celebration, this holiday can be for everyone.
Historically speaking, such a particular day celebrated every February 14, has a background that’s a lot more interesting—and a little darker—than the chocolates and roses we associate with it today.

The holiday actually grew out of a mix of the ancient Roman fertility festival Lupercalia and the story of Saint Valentine’s martyrdom.
Lupercalia, which according to historical context, was banned in the late 5th century, involved sacrificial rituals and pairing couples, while the Christian feast day, later established by Pope Gelasius, gradually became a celebration of romantic love.
By the Middle Ages, people in France and England believed that February 14 marked the start of birds’ mating season—adding another layer to the idea that the day should be about romance.
English poet Geoffrey Chaucer even captured this in his 14th-century poem The Parliament of Fowls, writing, “For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day / Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.”
Fast forward to today, and Valentine’s Day isn’t just about romantic love anymore. The rise of Galentine’s Day and solo celebrations shows that appreciation, connection, and joy aren’t exclusive to couples. So whether you’re flying solo or rounding up your crew, here are some fun, meaningful ways to celebrate:

Simple Brunch or Dinner with Your Squad
For those with hectic schedules, even a quick brunch or dinner together counts. Love doesn’t have to come with roses or candlelight. It can be laughter shared with friends, a quiet night of self-care, or a silly, snack-filled sleepover that makes memories you’ll laugh about for years.
So this February 14, whether you’re with your squad, on your own, or somewhere in between, take a moment to celebrate the love that surrounds you—and the love you give yourself.
After all, Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples—it’s for everyone.
