Cebu City has been placed under a state of calamity following the deadly landslide at the Binaliw Landfill, the City Council announced.
The council approved a resolution authorizing the release of ₱30 million from the city’s disaster fund to address urgent needs, particularly the disruption of garbage disposal services caused by the collapse. The measure was authored by Councilors Joel Garganera and Dave Tumulak.
As of January 13, the incident has claimed 13 lives, left 12 people injured, and 23 others remain missing.
City officials said the declaration of a state of calamity will allow the local government to fast-track emergency response efforts, access calamity funds, and provide immediate assistance to affected families and communities.
On Tuesday, the City declared January 16 as a Day of Mourning in honor of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
