A team of law students from the Liceo de Cagayan University (LDCU) won the championship in the Mindanao-wide debate competition over the weekend, making it the city's second debating champion in a month.
Spencer Palen, the LDCU debate team's leader, said the team won the competition on Sunday against the debaters from Cor Jesu College in Digos City, Davao del Sur province, at the second inter-law school debate organized by the Association of Law Students of the Philippines-Mindanao chapter and held at the Rizal Memorial Colleges in Davao City.
The LDCU Liceo Law Moot and Debate Society sent two teams: one led by Palen and comprised of Monica Flores and Casan Ali, and the other of Kate Honey Abrogar, Charlie Cubero, and Hans Pundato Disomimba.
Palen received approval from the three-member adjudicators as the overall best debater, while Flores was the best debater in the semifinal rounds.
Moreover, Palen's team competed in the preliminary round against teams from Notre Dame University in Cotabato City and the Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City.
Palen, a graduating law student preparing to take the bar exams in September, said he hoped the newly formed Liceo Law Moot and Debate Society, founded in 2021, would win a champion's trophy in one of the country's debate competitions.
Meanwhile, another group of law students from Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan won the championship in the first Justice Hilarion Aquino National Memorial Debate Competition in Manila earlier this month, which was organized by the Legal Education Board and the Commission on Elections.
