Senator Alan Peter Cayetano on Sunday urged all national government officials to step down and allow a snap election for a new set of leaders, saying this may be the only way to rebuild public trust in political institutions.
In a statement posted on his official social media accounts, Cayetano acknowledged that while some politicians still command genuine support, public confidence in government has eroded significantly.
“Now more than ever in our history, politicians are suspects,” he said. “People have lost trust in government and government officials. Honestly, who can blame them?”
The senator proposed a mass resignation covering the President, Vice President, senators, and members of the House of Representatives. Under his suggestion, none of the incumbents would be allowed to run in the succeeding election cycle.
Cayetano stressed that the bureaucracy would ensure the continuity of government services even in the absence of elected national officials. Local leaders such as governors, mayors, and barangay chairpersons — whom he described as “generally trusted” — would remain in office.
He described the proposal as a “clean slate” for Filipinos, calling it a possible turning point toward “renewal and revival.”
According to Cayetano, the move could serve as a peaceful alternative to uprisings. “Instead of People Power, sacrifice from people’s servants,” he said. “If we truly serve them, then starting over shouldn’t scare us.”
Cayetano urged both his colleagues in government and the public to reflect on the idea and pray about its implications.
“Real change starts with radical honesty — and the courage to admit when it’s time to step aside,” he added.
