Senator-elect Alan Peter Cayetano has asked the public to give presumptive president Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. a chance to prove what he could do as the next leader of the Philippines.

"He was elected, he is set to be proclaimed, give him a chance, let's see what he does then let's judge it later on," Cayetano said in a media briefing.

"Kasi, it is easy to judge him and his family before this [election]. Malinaw 'yun eh [That's clear]," Cayetano added.

He made the statement shortly after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) proclaimed him and 11 other senatorial bets as winners of the recently-concluded May 9 polls.

In 2016, Cayetano faced Marcos Jr. for the vice-presidential race wherein he repeatedly called the latter out over his family's ill-gotten wealth.

Marcos is poised to be the 17th President of the country after garnering more than 31 million votes, way ahead of his archrival Vice President Leni Robredo who only gathered 14.8 million votes.

However, Cayetano clarified that his stand over the Marcoses remains the same.

"Hindi nag-iba iyon. I did not retract. The issues on the Marcos family will remain, and it is up for them to answer and for the media to hound them and hold them accountable," he said.

Cayetano placed seventh in the senatorial race with 19,295,314 votes.
