A cardiologist from Cardinal Santos Medical Center recommended that former House Speaker Martin Romualdez remain in the hospital for four to six weeks before being transferred to another facility for an independent evaluation of his condition.

The recommendation was presented by Dr. Rody Sy before the Third Division of the Sandiganbayan during a hearing on the motion seeking Romualdez’s continued hospital confinement.

According to Sy, examinations conducted during Romualdez’s first two days at Cardinal Santos Medical Center showed that he was “cardiovascularly stable.” His blood pressure was considered normal, while his electrocardiogram (ECG) results were also normal at the time.

However, by Thursday, September 10, Romualdez’s blood pressure had risen to 170/110, prompting doctors to adjust his medication.

In addition, Romualdez’s psychiatrist increased his sleep medication.

Meanwhile, Dr. Rosalio Torres, overall coordinator and hematologist at Cardinal Santos Medical Center, said there is currently no scheduled surgery or other invasive medical procedure for Romualdez.

Romualdez is facing a plunder case over alleged kickbacks from flood control projects.
