Manila Archbishop Jose E. Cardinal Advincula expressed solidarity with the victims, families, and members of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University community following the recent shooting incident at the school.
In a message of solidarity, Advincula said he was joining the nation in praying for those affected by the tragedy, including the victims and their families, those who were injured and traumatized, and the entire university community.
“With a heavy heart, I join the entire nation in expressing our solidarity with those who have been affected by the recent shooting incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University,” Advincula said.
“We hold in prayer the victims and their families, those who were injured and traumatized, and the entire University community as you face this painful and difficult moment,” he added.
The Manila archbishop said violence within a school community affects more than those who suffer physical injuries, as it also damages the sense of safety and trust that students need to learn, grow, and pursue their aspirations.
“An act of violence within a school community wounds more than those who are physically injured. It wounds the sense of safety and trust that should allow our young people to learn, grow, dream, and become who God calls them to be,” Advincula said.
He urged the public to reflect on the challenges faced by young people and emphasized the need to pay closer attention to struggles that may not always be visible.
Advincula cited loneliness, anxiety, despair, family difficulties, bullying, academic pressures, and other personal crises as burdens that some young people may silently carry.
“We need to listen to them, not only when they speak loudly, but especially when they suffer quietly,” he said.
The cardinal also called for the creation of safe and supportive spaces where young people can openly seek assistance without fear of judgment or shame.
“We need to create spaces where they can speak without fear of judgment, seek help without shame, and know that they are valued and loved,” Advincula said.
While urging continued prayers for those affected, Advincula stressed that prayer should also encourage collective action to address violence and strengthen support for young people.
“Together, let us strengthen a culture of care, compassion, dialogue, and accompaniment so that violence and hatred may never have the final word,” he said.
Advincula concluded his message by praying for healing and consolation for those affected and asking for guidance and comfort for the Ateneo de Zamboanga community.
“May the Lord, Prince of Peace, bring healing and consolation to all who suffer, and may Mary, our Mother, accompany the entire Ateneo de Zamboanga community in this difficult time,” he said.
