Singer Cacai Mitra has expressed her complaint over a ₱94,355.21 electricity bill from Meralco, saying the charge is unexpectedly high for what she described as a residential household.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Mitra questioned the bill covering the period May 8 to June 7, which reflected consumption of 5,920 kilowatt-hours (kWh) billed at ₱15.94 per kWh. She said she has been careful with electricity use and does not operate a commercial establishment.
“Ayoko na sana makisabay, pero mahimatay naman ako dito Meralco. Super conscious na nga ako sa gamit ng kuryente. Bahay lang po kami hindi commercial building,” she said.
The issue prompted a response from Manila Electric Co., which said it has already reached out to Mitra to explain the details of her billing and consumption history.
Meralco said the account is classified as a high-load service and that records showed no unusual spike in usage during the billing period.
“Ms. Cacai’s account is classified as a high-load service and there was no unusual surge in her consumption, which is also reflected in the historical chart in her bill,” the company said.
It added that the increase in usage was consistent with seasonal consumption patterns.
“The increase in her electricity usage during the period in question is consistent with her seasonal consumption pattern. The actual consumption remains within the normal range of her previous bills, both when compared with the preceding months and with the same period last year,” Meralco said.
The utility firm also said it is open to conducting a technical survey of Mitra’s property to further explain the billing breakdown.
