Woody and Buzz Lightyear are back, and this time, the beloved cowboy is facing a new challenge: aging—and losing his hair.
Pixar released the first trailer for Toy Story 5 on Friday (Manila time), teasing a story that tackles modern childhood in the age of screens.
The film follows 8-year-old Bonnie (voiced by Greta Lee), whose obsession with her new tablet, the “Lilypad,” leaves little time for real-life play.
Jessie (Joan Cusack) confides in Woody (Tom Hanks), saying, “I’m losing Bonnie to this device.” Woody replies with his classic wisdom: “Toys are for play, but tech is for everything.”
Of course, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is there to save the day—and the playtime.
“It’s been too long, cowboy,” Buzz tells Woody as the duo teams up once more to rescue Bonnie from screen addiction.
But internet chatter has quickly shifted to another detail: Woody’s hair—or lack thereof. The trailer doesn’t shy away from poking fun at the aging cowboy.
Trixie (Kristen Schaal) quips, “Someone needs a brown marker,” while Forky (Tony Hale) adds, “She thinks you’re old, because you’re bald, Woody.” Even Lilypad asks if Woody is an “old man toy.”
The humor has sparked a wave of memes and reactions online, especially among Filipino millennials who grew up with the franchise, dubbing it “Woody kalbo”.
One netizen commented, “Pero witty din naisip nila na yung childhood memories tumatanda na. Nakakatuwa.”
Another joked, “Finally, represented na kaming mga pa-north 🤣,” while others pointed out how the joke mirrors the aging of fans themselves: “It mirrors the age of fans from season 1 🤣.”
Toy Story 5 boasts returning voice talent alongside newcomers Conan O’Brien and Ernie Hudson. Andrew Stanton, who has worked on all previous Toy Story films, co-directs with Kenna Harris, with Lindsey Collins producing.
Following the box office and critical success of Toy Story 4, which grossed over $1 billion globally and won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, expectations are high for this latest chapter.
Toy Story 5 swings into theaters on June 19—Woody’s bald head and all.
For fans, seeing their childhood heroes age alongside them is both hilarious and oddly comforting.
